Twenty-eight years ago this week, Sting took on Big Van Vader in an unsanctioned 'White Castle Of Fear' strap match at WCW Superbrawl. What followed would be one of the most brutal matches of the year.
Sting and Vader were two opponents who always seemed to bring out the best in each other, having classic contests across a lot of the early nineties. With his colourful face paint, blonde crewcut and unending charisma, Sting was the complete anthesis of the huge, burly, ultraviolent bad guy Vader, which was probably why they worked so well together.
The more the fans cheered for Sting the more Vader would beat him down and how he did that in this classic match. Pounding the Stinger with an array of stiff punches and hard-hitting manoeuvres, the multi-coloured babyface took an absolute beating here but, fuelled by the cheers of an absorbed crowd, would hold his own and even bloody his gigantic opponent.
An edge of your seat bout between two wrestlers born to compete against one another, each on the top of his game and definitely not holding anything back. Every wrestling fan no matter how big should watch this week's 'On This Week' even if you have to drag them with a strap round all four corners to do so.
